India's climate is tough on vinyl. High temperatures, monsoon humidity, and year-round dust make it one of the most challenging environments for record collectors in the world. If you're building a collection in India — whether you're in Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, or anywhere else — storing your records properly isn't optional. It's essential.
This guide covers everything you need to know to keep your LPs safe for decades.

WHY VINYL RECORD STORAGE MATTERS MORE IN INDIA
Vinyl records are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a material that warps when exposed to sustained heat above 60°C, absorbs moisture that leads to mould, and collects dust that causes surface noise and permanent micro-scratches on the grooves.
In India, we deal with:
• Summer temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C
• Monsoon humidity between 70–90% in most cities
• Year-round dust, especially in northern India
This makes proper storage not just good practice — it's the difference between a collection that lasts 50 years and one that degrades in five.

STEP 1: PROTECT EACH RECORD WITH THE RIGHT SLEEVES
The first and most important layer of protection is your sleeves. There are two you need:
Inner sleeves (goes around the vinyl disc itself)
The paper sleeves that come inside most album jackets shed fine fibres that scratch your records with every insert and removal. Replace them with anti-static rice paper inner sleeves. The rice paper construction generates no static charge, which means dust is not attracted to the surface — and no fibres means no micro-scratches.
Outer sleeves (goes over the entire album jacket)
Outer sleeves protect the cardboard jacket from dust, humidity, and physical wear. A high-quality outer sleeve made from polypropylene — clear, snug, and anti-static — also acts as a first barrier against India's ever-present dust.
Cleveo makes both. Our outer sleeves are 3 mil crystal-clear polypropylene (12.75" x 12.75") and our inner sleeves are anti-static rice paper with a clear poly window. Both are archival-grade and acid-free.

STEP 2: STORE RECORDS VERTICALLY, NEVER STACKED
Records stored flat — stacked on top of each other — will warp under their own weight over time, especially in warm conditions. Always store your vinyl vertically, standing upright like books on a shelf.
Tips for vertical storage:
• Do not lean records at an angle for long periods — this causes edge warp
• Use a record crate, shelf, or dedicated storage unit that keeps records standing straight
• Avoid storing records in direct sunlight or near windows — UV rays accelerate jacket fading and can raise surface temperatures significantly
---
STEP 3: CONTROL TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY
The ideal storage environment for vinyl records is:
• Temperature: 18–21°C
• Relative humidity: 45–50%
In most Indian homes, this means using air conditioning during summer months and silica gel packets in your storage area to absorb moisture during the monsoon. If you store records in a cupboard or closed shelf unit, place a few silica gel packs inside and replace them every 3–4 months.
Avoid storing records in:
• Attics or lofts (extreme heat)
• Garages (heat, dust, and pests)
• Bathrooms or kitchens (humidity)
• Near speakers or amplifiers (heat and vibration)
---
STEP 4: HANDLE RECORDS CORRECTLY
Even the best storage is undone by poor handling. Always:
• Hold records by the edges and the label — never touch the grooves
• Use a carbon fibre brush to remove surface dust before every play
• Never place a record on a dusty surface
• Return records to their inner sleeve immediately after playing
---
STEP 5: CLEAN YOUR RECORDS BEFORE STORAGE
If you're buying second-hand records — which most Indian collectors do, given the limited availability of new pressings locally — always clean them before sleeving and storing. A dirty record stored in a clean sleeve will contaminate the sleeve and re-contaminate the record.
A basic wet clean with a record cleaning solution and a microfibre cloth will remove most surface grime. For serious collectors, a record cleaning machine (RCM) or ultrasonic cleaner is worth the investment.
