The Vinyl Starter Kit

Congratulations. You've made one of the better decisions of your life. A record player sitting in your room — or maybe a second-hand turntable you picked up at Chor Bazaar — is the beginning of something genuinely good.

But now what?

Most people go into vinyl with the gear sorted and very little idea about what keeps it working well. This guide is for you. Not the audiophile who debates cartridges for sport — the person who just wants to play records without ruining them.

First: understand what you're working with

A vinyl record is a physical medium. That means every speck of dust, every fingerprint, every humid afternoon in Mumbai or Delhi can affect how it sounds. The needle (stylus) is literally dragging itself through microscopic grooves. The cleaner those grooves, the better the music.

This isn't intimidating — it just means that a little care goes a long way.

The four things you actually need

1. An inner sleeve
The paper sleeve your record comes in? It's the enemy. Paper fibres shed directly onto the record surface. Replace it with a good poly-lined inner sleeve — the kind that has an anti-static lining. This is the single cheapest upgrade with the biggest impact.

2. An outer sleeve
The outer sleeve protects the album cover from ring wear, dust, and India's worst enemy — monsoon humidity. A resealable outer sleeve keeps moisture out and the artwork looking like it did on day one.

3. A soft brush
Before every play, run an anti-static brush across the record surface. This lifts loose dust from the grooves before the stylus has to deal with it. 30 seconds of brushing saves you from clicks, pops, and long-term groove damage.

4. A cleaning kit
A basic record cleaning kit — cleaning fluid and a microfibre pad — handles the deeper grime. New records from the factory often have mould release compound on them. Second-hand records have decades of storage on them. A quick clean before the first play makes a real difference.

All four of these are available at cleveo.in — designed specifically for Indian conditions, with the kind of humidity and dust levels that most global brands don't design for.

What you don't need right away

You don't need an ultrasonic cleaner. You don't need a record weight. You don't need to spend ₹15,000 on a mat. Start with the basics, play your records, and buy more when you know what's actually bothering you.

One last thing: how to handle a record

Hold records by the edges and the label. Never touch the playing surface. The oils from your fingers don't clean off easily and attract dust like a magnet. It sounds obvious until you're pulling a favourite record out in a hurry and you've left a thumbprint across Side A.

That's it. Four things, one rule. Go play some music.
